I have been the
director of Murrumbidgee Magic chorus (originally known as the Wagga Wagga
Harmony Chorus) since its inception in 1992, and in that time have seen the
personal and musical growth of a large number of women singers, not only in
Wagga Wagga but also across the region. Such changes occur through weekly
rehearsals, chorus retreats and coaching sessions, as well as regional
workshops and national competitions.
Apart from directing
Murrumbidgee Magic (currently 1st place Small Chorus in the
Region), I have sung in numerous quartets over the years – in numerous voice
parts! The experience of being Education Coordinator for 4 years opened up a
wide range of opportunities, including access to some wonderful educational
events, as well as the chance to visit many Australian choruses. In 2003 I
was appointed an International Faculty Associate.
In my ‘other’ life, I
am an Educational Designer at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga. This
job primarily involves helping academics prepare learning materials for
distance education using a variety of media. Recently we used the technology
of interactive video teaching to have a quartet in Wagga Wagga coached via
TV screen from Bathurst. The success of this interaction has been taken to
Sweet Adelines International in the hope of it being used internationally –
it would certainly cut down on the cost of having international coaches work
with Australian choruses and quartets.
I love sharing my
barbershop knowledge with others, particularly in running one day workshops
for new members. Other classes include:
- The basics of vocal
production
- PVIs for chorus
singers
- Developing arm
waving skills
- Improving your
quartet sound
